Production[edit]

Or Iravu was a stage play written by C. N. Annadurai. It was originally written for K. R. Ramasamy's Krishnan memorial drama company by Annadurai. A. V. Meiyappan of AVM Productions decided to make a film based on the play. Annadurai was paid 10,000 for writing the screenplay. Annadurai went to AVM studios and wrote the entire script and dialogues totalling 300 pages in a single night. The screenplay was later modified by the director and the producer of the film. This was the third film to be made based on Annadurai's plays after Velaikari (1949) and Nallathambi (1949). Mac os change language. P. Neelakantan, who had begun working for AVM in the 1947 film Naam Iruvar as assistant director, made his directorial debut with this film.[3] Per Annadurai's recommendation, Ramasamy was hired to play the hero, reprising his role from the play. The play depicted events that happen in a single night, and older incidents were depicted using flashbacks, but in the film version, flashbacks were replaced with a linear narration. The completed film was 14,980 feet in length.[4][5][6]

Soundtrack[edit]

The music was composed by R. Sudarsanam. Lyrics were by Mahakavi Bharathiyar, Bharathidasan, T. K. Shanmugam, K. P. Kamatchi Sundharam & Ku. Ma. Balasubramaniam. The song 'Ayya Saami Aaoji Saami' is based on 'Chico Chico from Puerto Rico' from the 1945 American film Doll Face.[7]

ORRIRAVU MOVIE REVIEW

Oneof the first Indian films to take a scientificapproach to the paranormal is here; OrrIravu. Some of you might wonder whetherthere can be a scientific approach tothe supernatural which is considered tobe under the realm of superstition. But,there are people who believe in this andstudy such phenomenon with avid interest.Orr Iravu tells the story of one suchresearcher who is out to know the truthbehind a haunted mansion in Munnar.
The film begins at a TV talk show withthe debate being on the supernatural. One of the pro-supernatural beliefs participantsopens up on his own experiences. He claimsto be the owner of an ancient mansionin Munnar where many dark, unusual andeerie deaths have taken place over theyears. In an attempt to get to the bottomof it and ‘exorcise' the spiritsif necessary, he contacts a student ofparanormal phenomenon based in London. The student is ready to accept
this challenge as part of his project work and landsup in the mansion all alone with his equipments toknow what is really happening inside. Once inside,he starts to realize that it is not for silly reasonsthat the mansion has been unoccupied for many years;even the owner doesn't enter the place. He discoversthat the depth of the actual problem has been hiddenfrom him and that he is up against spirits that arebaying for the blood of anyone who dared to intrudeinto their peace. With his scientific approach tothe matter, he begins studying the issue and discoversthe death of previous paranormal observers in themansion. He is shaken to know that even professionalsat this matter have not been able to escape the premises. But, there is no way out for him now but to fightthe terrors that the haunted castle holds. Does thehuman spirit prevail over the supernatural forces;watch Orr Iravu to find out.
The first thing about Orr Iravu is that the chiefprotagonist's face (the paranormal phenomenastudent from London) is not shown throughout the lengthof the movie. From the moment his character is introduced, the movie moves in viewpoint mode i.e. what is shownon screen is what the character sees. That in itselfmakes Orr Iravu a different movie experience. Themovie takes a new approach to horror. It is not theusual kind that appears in Indian cinema with eeriesounds and shrieks, hideous faces and forms whichsometimes make us nauseous rather than scared. OrrIravu gives a completely different treatment to thesupernatural. What is interesting is the paranormalspecialists' approach to an exorcism challenge. They do not face the issue with a cross or the grail;like we have seen in many films before. The approachis completely scientific; with detectors, walkie talkies, equipments to detect abnormal frequencies, camerasthat are strategically set up in different positionsto capture unusual activity etc.
Three of the most important factors in a horror flickare the camera work, lighting and the background music.Camera work is just what the director ordered forsuch a kind of movie. Of course, the camera is controlledby the character's movements in the viewpointshots and thus gives us a realistic feel. It is reallya unique experience to see the camera become the faceof the character and make the audience experiencethe movements first hand. Lighting too has been faithfulto the movie. There has been no attempt to artificiallyalter the lighting to make things darker or brighterthan they normally would be within a haunted castlewithout electricity or human presence for years. Asa viewer, one feels that the lighting is just whatwould have been ambient in such a setting. There areno attempts to induce fear by showing dark cornerswhich could hold unknown terrors. Background musicis fine, but could have enhanced the impact of manyscenes if done in a better manner.
Orr Iravu has a clear agenda; to scare. And, the directors(three of them) have succeeded in giving the audiencea good scare. One would not rate it as spine chilling;but there are moments which can give you cold feet. That in itself is a victory of sorts for the filmmakers because to genuinely scare an audience is atough job. With a run time of just over 100 minutesOrr Iravu is also crisp. There are also no speed breakersin the name of songs or any other unpleasant intrusions. The only drawback of the film is its climax whichfalls flat after all the scaring and mystery of thepreceding portions. But, in a unique attempt of thiskind, it can be overlooked.
If you are the type who loves to be given a scare in theaters and also love unique viewing experiencesin cinema, chances are that you will like this one.
Verdict:Successfully scary
